The pickleball kitchen rule, explained
By the PaddleBag team · Updated October 5, 2026 · Basahin sa Tagalog
The kitchen is the most talked-about rule in pickleball, and the most misunderstood. The short version: you can go in the kitchen, you just can't volley from it. Here's exactly what that means.
What is the kitchen?
The kitchen, officially the non-volley zone, is the area 7 feet (2.13 m) deep on each side of the net, running the full width of the court. The kitchen line is part of the kitchen.
It exists to stop players from standing at the net and smashing every ball. It's what makes soft shots like the dink so important in pickleball.
The rule in one line
You can't volley (hit the ball before it bounces) while any part of your body is touching the kitchen or the kitchen line.
When you can be in the kitchen
- Any time, as long as you're not volleying.
- To hit a ball that has already bounced in the kitchen, like a short dink.
- Standing in it while the ball is on the other side. Just get out before you volley.
Kitchen faults
- Volleying with a foot on the kitchen line or inside it.
- Volleying outside, then letting your momentum carry you into the kitchen, even after the ball is dead.
- Dropping your paddle or hat into the kitchen as part of a volley's follow-through.
- Volleying before both feet are re-established outside the kitchen after you stepped in.
- A serve that lands in the kitchen or on the kitchen line.
Myths new players believe
- "You can never go in the kitchen." False. You just can't volley from it.
- "Your paddle can't be over the kitchen." False. Only your body and things touching you count, not the air above the zone.
- "The kitchen line is in on the serve." False. A serve landing on the kitchen line is a fault.
Getting good at the kitchen
Most rallies at the intermediate level are won at the kitchen line with patient dinks and resets. Drill your soft game and you'll win more points than any big drive.
