What is DUPR, and how do you get a rating?
By the PaddleBag team · Updated October 5, 2026
DUPR is the rating most pickleball players, clubs, and tournaments use to sort skill levels. If you've been asked "What's your DUPR?" at open play, here's what it means and how to get one.
What DUPR means
DUPR stands for Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating. It's a single number from 2.000 to 8.000 that estimates your level based on real match results. It's used around the world, so a 3.5 in Cebu should mean roughly the same as a 3.5 in Manila or abroad.
You get separate ratings for doubles and singles.
What the numbers roughly mean
- 2.0–2.9: New player. Learning the rules, serve, and return.
- 3.0–3.4: Can rally consistently and is starting to dink and play at the kitchen.
- 3.5–3.9: Solid recreational player with control, placement, and a third-shot drop.
- 4.0–4.9: Advanced. Consistent soft game, strong hands, plays with strategy.
- 5.0+: Tournament and elite level.
These ranges are a rough guide. Your actual rating comes from your results, not a skills checklist.
How your rating is calculated
DUPR updates your rating from match scores, not just wins and losses. Beating a stronger team helps more than beating a weaker one, and a close loss to a better team can still help. The score margin matters too.
Your rating also has a reliability score. The more matches you record against a variety of players, the more reliable it gets.
How to get a DUPR rating
- Create a free account in the DUPR app or website.
- Play recorded matches. Everyone in the match needs a DUPR account so the result counts for all players.
- Join tournaments, leagues, or clubs that submit results to DUPR. These usually count for more than casual self-reported games.
- Keep playing. Your rating moves as more results come in.
DUPR vs self-rating
Many open play groups still ask you to self-rate. That's fine for casual games, but self-ratings drift. A DUPR rating is based on results, so it's a fairer way to find balanced games and the right tournament bracket.

FAQ
Is DUPR free?
Creating a DUPR account and getting a rating is free. Some extra features in the app may need a paid plan.
What is a good DUPR rating?
Most recreational players are between 3.0 and 4.0. A 4.0+ is a strong club player, and 5.0+ is tournament level.
Can I get a DUPR rating without joining a tournament?
Yes. Recorded matches with other DUPR players can count. Results from clubs, leagues, and tournaments usually carry more weight than casual self-reported games.
Why didn't my DUPR change after a match?
Results only count when everyone in the match has a DUPR account and the match is recorded. Also, if the result was what the ratings predicted, your rating may barely move.
